KL Rao Sagar Project, popularly known as Pulichintala project, which is seen as a boon for AP is back in the spotlight with the government of Telangana demanding release Rs AP. Rs 40 million immediately as a pre-condition for 20 tmcft impound water in the project.

TS Irrigation Minister Harish Rao on Sunday said the government had no objection Telangana to store 20 packets tmcft if rehabilitation and resettlement (R & R) were paid. "We do not want the water to go to waste in the sea, but at the same time, people should not suffer," he said.

When contacted, AP Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said the government would release funds for R & R packages that will run on the ST.

A joint meeting of irrigation officials of both States estimated Rs. Rs 130 million is required for the recycling and recovery package covering 13 villages that face the threat of flooding in Nalgonda.

The government raised the issue of Telangana R & R package when AP asked him to increase the storage level in the draft this tmcft 9-20 tmcft.

Although the dam had a storage capacity of 45.7 tmcft water, the government decided to record 11 tmcft (September) considering the submergence of villages under the project. At 44.75 tmcft, 13 villages in Nalgonda and Guntur 15 faced submergence.

About 94 percent of the work was declared to be completed on the project, which is being built across the Krishna River between NSP and Prakasam Barrage to provide water to Krishna delta. However, only Rs. 3 million rupees was spent on R & R so far.
