New Delhi: The CNDH has issued notice to the government of Andhra Pradesh after some forest officials been brutally assaulted workers from the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, an official statement Tuesday.

According to the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), the victims were extremely poor and were cutting trees in a forest on the border between the two states in order to make a living.

"The workers were unaware that they had been hired by unscrupulous elements to acquire high value timber from the forest. The poor villagers were not aware of the legal consequences of their actions," said the CNDH.

However, the Andhra Pradesh police brutally attacked the workers belonging to the border districts of Vellore, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri in northern Tamil Nadu, the commission said, adding that there was a video clip of the whole incident.

"The law enforcement agencies to exercise their powers only in accordance with the provisions of the law. The videos show a bleak picture of the unarmed workers who were made to undress and were brutally attacked by certain people claiming to be agents of Andhra forest Pradesh, "said the CNDH.

A notice has been issued to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, asking for a report within four weeks.
